Repeat because on topic:

The GOP knows that if they back down, they will lose face among supporters, and these people are known to hold a grudge.

They know that they will lose support among moderates, but they are counting on these people being fickle and having a short enough memory that they can be won back over.

So given this lose-lose situation, they will go with the option that gets their Man of Choice in for life and worry about damage control later.

There’s some generalized background on how dark money PACs work, what they do and how and why, and how they neutered the FEC, but the framing story is a specific Montana case (with some diversions to Scott Walker and Wisconsin).

My first concern was always just getting out of the way.

My father died when I was young and I grew up with just my mom and older sister. I learned that women were to be respected and treated properly and could never in my life force myself on a woman who was not interested or think of using violence to settle a dispute or get my way.

I’ve been in fights, done stupid shit when drunk, I’m not proud of them. I can only hope to learn from them. The thing though is Kavanaugh is a guy IMO who has abused alcohol for much of his life probably. And it got covered up as he moved up the ladder. I honestly could live with some of it if he hadn’t hurt women like Dr. Ford because of his drinking but it’s the lack of accountability. It’s the lies. It’s the lashing out DID YOU at a senator whose father is a recovering alcoholic. It’s the phony self-righteousness he went after Bill Clinton with. It’s that he really had no business getting a judgeship in the first place in 2006. It’s how he continues to very much be the same guy who is remembered as a nasty drunk. I don’t know if he still drinks or not but he hasn’t learned. Does he deserve to be impoverished because of it? No, but he shouldn’t be trusted with the Supreme Court.

I got attacked once by a drunk guy, while drunk in downtown Chicago, but not at a bar. I restrained him using minimal force, and got arrested for protecting myself, when in many states I could have legally shot my attacker. Not that I’d want to shoot the guy. I’m pretty sure that would fuck me up for life.

Don’t know if I should link to it or not but Wittes has decided that Kavanaugh wouldn’t get his vote if he were a Senator. I think Wittes early on in this whole fiasco let his personal friendship and like of the man get in the way. And you know I honestly get that, we want our friends to do well which is probably why so many of those people signed that statement. I’m not excusing that mind you. But I think so many people formed a positive impression of Kavanaugh from either working with him on the Clinton shenanigans, in the Bush WH, or for him in his current job as a judge. He obviously isn’t an asshole all the time. And I think when you form friendships, you ignore things in someone that you wouldn’t in someone you disliked or even were neutrally disposed to. And I think that happened here. I think at the end of the day, Kavanaugh did perjure himself and there needs to be some repercussions for that and he definitely doesn’t belong on SCOTUS. I just hope he can make genuine amends to the people he’s hurt because of his drinking. Whether that takes total sobriety or reflection, that’s up to him but he needs to do that rather than get a lifelong appointment to SCOTUS or his current job.

Wittes caught a lot of flak for defending Kavanaugh after his earlier hearing. His is a valid viewpoint, and he saw something different in Kavanaugh from what many of us saw. Plus, you know, Wittes is also a big friend of Comey, who has his own flaws.

This reads as heartfelt, and heartwrenching, and I think it’s a good take for any moderates or Conservatives who care more about the country than the GOP.

It was inevitable that Trump would nominate at least one Supreme Court Justice, that his nominees would be terrible for progressive causes, and that given the composition of the Senate that we’d be powerless to stop it. Kavanaugh is something different, and Wittes gets to the heart of that.

Thanks man. One of my reasonable conservative friends linked to it. She hates Trump but she’s definitely not crossing our way anytime soon. But you’re right. Kavanaugh would be something different. It’s almost why while I would oppose the nomination, I could kind of live with someone more ideologically conservative but more ethical and less partisan motivated than Kavanaugh. I don’t think Amy Barrett is that person tbh but there’s gotta be some conservative judge somewhere that fits that.

Now I never had anything like that but I was a bit bummed this summer when I lost my keychain and a magnet I bought. It was a good thing my gym card had fallen off earlier in the week due to flimsiness not anything I did. I’ll freely admit here that I’ve done stupid shit. Not anything illegal but shit I would be understandably uncomfortable talking about in the Senate which is why if I ever made it as far as Kavanaugh, I would probably respectfully ask that my name be withdrawn from consideration.

My favorite Ebay listing - seller placed a watch on the platen of a scanner. HORRIBLE pictures, but good enough for me to know it was a model that, when cleaned up nicely, goes for >$60 routinely.

I got it for $8. Case, dial, and hands in excellent condition. Movement cleaned up well*, and I saved about $50 on one of the more iconic Elgins of the 1950s.

*After I got rid of an Exxon Valdez worth of oil - why do some people think a watch will run better if you fill it with oil?

The same thing has been happening in their Senate forecast. It’s too early to say this is a trend, but Greg Sargent has said that the GOP’s strategy in defending Kavanaugh is “pure Trumpism” - angrily defending the accused, and denouncing the mere suggestion of wrongdoing, as Trump did when his 19 accusers came forward, and after the Access Hollywood tape dropped.

Republicans and right wingers LOVE this shit - standing up to the “libs” and “Feminazis.” Ultimately, it worked for them in 2016, and they seem to be banking on it working again this year.

And of course, I’ve read a LOT MORE THINGS where women are outraged by the continued defenses of Kavanaugh.

I’m sure there will be. I had no idea what was going on the first time I got an alert buzzer from my phone years ago. My phone had never made that awful noise before.

I did not get a phone to give other people the ability to use it as an alert system, and had not heard about the alerts. I’m not opposed to them, but it was surprising to me.

I’ve also never been in a bar fight.

Like many here, I guess that I never had any interest in getting hit in the back of head with a heavy beer mug, or stuck in the face with the shattered end of a bottle or glass.

Like a few here, I have had to settle up and quickly leave a place or two when I have seen the start of one. And not gone back to that particular bar. This happened more than once back when I was in the Army in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

A friend who was an enlisted man in the marines (in the 1970’s) used to talk about how his squad, as a group, would take a new squad member to a bar and get him drunk. If the new member got drunk and became a fighting drunk, they would do their best to keep him away from alcohol. And definitely never invite him to go drinking with them.

So, yes, if I knew somebody was a fighting drunk, I would make it a point to not go drinking with him (or her). And if they think that makes me less of man, I am fine with that.

And of course, I’ve read a LOT MORE THINGS where women are outraged by the continued defenses of Kavanaugh.

In the end, I guess it depends on who’s more motivated.

If women would just deny Republicans the ability to reproduce it would solve this problem, but Republican women seem to be into being oppressed.

Republicans and right wingers LOVE this shit - standing up to the “libs” and “Feminazis.” Ultimately, it worked for them in 2016, and they seem to be banking on it working again this year.

Thanks man. One of my reasonable conservative friends linked to it. She hates Trump but she’s definitely not crossing our way anytime soon. But you’re right. Kavanaugh would be something different. It’s almost why while I would oppose the nomination, I could kind of live with someone more ideologically conservative but more ethical and less partisan motivated than Kavanaugh. I don’t think Amy Barrett is that person tbh but there’s gotta be some conservative judge somewhere that fits that.

I spent 1-2 nights most weekends, every summer I was in college, in bars. I never witnessed, nor did I take part in a bar fight. I guess I just don’t know many belligerent drunks.

I bartended at a punk club in Downtown Houston to pay for college. It was the place where frat boys and rich assholes went to observe what they thought were deviants in their natural habitat.

Fights were ALWAYS started by some frat boy or rich asshole pushing one of the regulars. Every…fucking…time. And instead of breaking them up we’d let the regular give the guy a couple of good punches and kicks with their Docs before we’d save them. No need to rush.

Every single night, I watched this happen.

A fight at a bar like that is not like some drunk pushing and bowing up at Chet’s party when Mom and Dad are away. I saw some of them get seriously hurt when they got bottles smashed over their heads or hit by guys wearing big skull rings. Noses broken, ribs broken, cut up faces. All because some TKE frat boy thought he’d go slumming and get aggressive with someone.

Kavanaugh, having been born in 1965, would have been KEENLY AWARE of that, so much so that even today he’d surely remember it - legal drinking would have continuously receded before him for 5 years.

So, to say ‘the drinking age was 18 then’, it’s a remarkable bit of misdirection, which he didn’t need to do. He could have just said, “Sure, we were underage, and we drank anyway”, and nobody would have thought worse of him.

Which is why his Eddie Haskell routine here was a plain insult to my intelligence.

A minor point and a day late: I want to return to the John Oliver takedown of Kavanaugh this Sunday: after much thought, I found Oliver’s treatment of the calendar needlessly cruel and unfair. For whatever reason, the father decided having a detailed calendar was a useful tool for the family and it was important to Brett to emulate his father. It does not help our cause when we mock someone who was a teenager at the time for trying to live up to his father’s expectations and model himself in his father’s footsteps. It remains important to Brett; we shouldn’t abandon compassion.

I agree that we shouldn’t abandon compassion, but I think Bront was taking advantage of any compassion out there when he tried to portray his emulation of his father with the calendar as something that would make his testimony more believable. It didn’t. The tears only made it worse. He was taking advantage of his father’s good name (making an assumption here that this has some validity) to defend his own sullied name.

Oh, copious references to him being a blubbering Christian who was really torn on whether to disclose this information to his new-ish wife.

Pretty reprehensible letter, all in all. Doesn’t really address what happens to Swetnick if she’s lying, but that’s just a minor detail.

He is being considered. He has a sore shoulder, so it may be iffy. He usually shares right field with Melky Cabrera and Francona likes him against lefties.

I expect him if he is okay to play.

It’s gonna be a tough series against the Astros. But we played them fairly tough this year.

He had no knowledge, direct or indirect, of what happened in the 1980’s and so is irrelevant to the actual matter. Indeed, the psychological problems that her father alluded to could very well have arisen because of trauma she experienced when she was in high school. But that’s pure speculation on my part. Really disgraceful letter.
